| I was a stranger and you welcomed me. Matthew 25: 31
Refugees are those who flee their homeland and can’t go back because of the threat of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality or political affiliation. The United States limits the number of refugees admitted into the country. The current quota is 76,000, but the demand is far greater; especially, since 9/11 the borders were closed for many months and the rules were rewritten. According to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), • 350,000 people fled the poverty and violence of the Congo last year • 600,000 Sudanese are uprooted, • as are 350,000 Somalis; • 200.000 refugees have left war-torn Chechnya; and • more than 3.4 million Afghan refugees remain in Iran and Pakistan. And there’s Laos and other East Asian countries, there’s Bosnia and other European countries…. Many of these people spend years in terrible conditions in refugee camps. These staggering numbers can make us forget the individuals for the masses. And it is only in meeting the men, the women, and the children that we begin to get a sense of what worldwide violence and poverty has meant….., and of what a new life in the United States can mean. |
